My job for the city of Louisville was to recruit sporting events, conferences and the like to put heads in beds in local hotels and restaurants. Basically a job to spark commerce. One morning I was reading a magazine about Ironman wanting to find a location to have another one of their competitions. The lightbulb went on. I had known Ironman was the No. 1 sports brand in the world and I knew Louisville was the perfect venue for the event. So I reread the story, jotted down the website and made a phone call.
A week later an Ironman representative was sitting in my car as we toured the city. He slowly became energized, seeing the beautiful Ohio River, the majestic roads through eastern Jefferson County and the scenic Southern Parkway area where the proposed run was to be held.
I had him hooked.
A week later the CEO flew in. We did the same dog-and-pony routine. He left. Two days later he called and said he wanted a full-blown competition in my hometown. However, the bid fee was more than what I had to offer. So a board meeting was called. The CEO, an overweight bean counter who had never heard of the event (really), couldn’t get his head around it. “It’ll cost too much,” he said.
My reply? “If I can’t do it, fire me.”
I was given permission to carry on. Four weeks later I had the bid fee of six figures wrapped up. Now the Ford Ironman Louisville is in its second five-year contract. Oh, and now it’s the largest Ironman event in the world. I said world.
So even when roadblocks are put in front of you, learn how to get over them. And eliminate the negative thinkers–and negativity–in your world. They’ll never be anything but a burden.
